National Protective Systems, Inc. Achieves Campus Security Breakthrough

By Megan Johnson on November 17, 2017

With reports of safety issues on college campuses constantly in the news, institutions of higher learning must work to establish the best systems and programs of security.

Over the course of 27 months, National Protective Systems personnel perfected a new system of security at the University of Bridgeport by integrating its Campus Shield platform with IP video systems to give on-site security teams the ability to instantly see and record situations facing individuals in distress.

A manufacturer of personal security systems for academic, healthcare, and other institutions, National Protective Systems is a national leader in manufacturing, installing, and maintaining campus-wide security solutions through radio frequency technology.

According to a recent press release, in a mock drill at the University of Bridgeport (on Nov. 9) campus security cameras displayed real-time video when a volunteer pressed the Campus Shield fob, letting university police see the assailant posing a threat and in the exact location and identity of the individual in distress. Such knowledge allows security teams to prepare for how to approach the situation.

“This is groundbreaking. I can now follow someone under duress in real time and see what is causing that duress,” said Joe Della Monica, Director of Campus Safety at the University of Bridgeport, in the release. “This information allows me to deploy our resources with optimal efficiency. In addition, I now know what my officers are walking into so their safety during these events is improved as well.”

This video integration can be installed on existing closed-circuit IP security camera technology. The system is activated by pressing a small key fob, called a Personal Alarm Locator (PAL), to pinpoint the location of the emergency and displays the identity of the user including medical and emergency contact info. The system works both indoors and outdoors.

Recognized as an innovator for adopting this new system and the recipient of the 2003 Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Award, the private, 90-year-old University of Bridgeport works to keep its 5,600+ students safe on campus.

While some millennials view devices such as smartphones as protection from physical harm, recent survey data from ADT showed that 75 percent are interested in purchasing additional security devices. Perhaps the PAL system is exactly what these students are looking for.
